Job Title: Accountant

Reports To: Finance Head

Work place: NEWA, Head Office

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Summary of roles and responsibilities of the position

The accountant will be responsible for managing the financial records, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, and supporting the organization’s mission through accurate and transparent financial reporting. This role requires strong attention to detail, integrity, and the ability to work collaboratively with program and administrative staff.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Maintain accurate financial records, including ledgers, trial balances, and reconciliations.

  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.

  • Monitor cash flow and ensure timely payments to vendors, staff, and partners.

Budgeting & Reporting

  • Assist in preparing budgets for projects and organizational operations.

  • Track expenditures against budgets and provide variance analysis.

  • Prepare donor-specific financial reports in compliance with grant agreements.

Audit & Compliance

  • Support external and internal audits by preparing documentation and responding to queries.

  • Ensure compliance with local tax laws, pension contributions, and government regulations.

  • Maintain proper filing of financial documents for transparency and accountability.

Payroll & Benefits

  • Prepare payroll reconciliation. The monthly payroll, the ledger registered in the system, and withdrawals from the bank, including allowances, deductions, and pension contributions.

  • Record and reconcile the amount withdrawn from the bank and in the system reconciliation in Excel, and attach the summary of income tax, pension, and withholding tax in the payment voucher

  • Ensure compliance with labor laws and organizational policies.

Capacity Building

  • Provide financial guidance to program staff and partners.

  • Train staff on financial policies and procedures when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of accounting standards and donor compliance requirements.

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Peachtree, or similar).

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • High level of integrity and commitment to the mission of the organization.

Working Conditions

Based in Addis

 Occasional travel to project sites may be required.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Supervision:-work independently in routine tasks under the general direction of the Finance and Administration Manager.

  • Decision Making:- Makes routine decisions about work responsibilities and is accountable for them.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES OVER DATA OF INFORMATION: Has access to important and highly confidential information relating to the network.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES OVER ASSETS: Computer, printer, office furniture. Inventory of office equipment and stationery, Custodian of financial files.
