The Charge Midwife is responsible for providing clinical leadership, operational coordination, and supervisory oversight of maternal and newborn health services within the assigned maternity unit. The role involves ensuring the delivery of safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care throughout antenatal, labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn care services. The Charge Midwife coordinates staff activities, monitors quality of care, supports clinical decision-making, and promotes positive maternal and neonatal outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Duties:
Provide direct midwifery care to women and newborns as required and serve as a clinical resource for midwives and nursing staff within the maternity unit.
Oversee the delivery of antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care services to ensure compliance with established clinical standards and best practices.
Monitor maternal and fetal conditions and support staff in managing routine and high-risk obstetric cases.
Assist in the identification, management, and escalation of obstetric and neonatal emergencies, including postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, fetal distress, obstructed labor, and neonatal resuscitation.
Ensure proper assessment, monitoring, and documentation of labor progress and maternal-newborn outcomes.
Collaborate with obstetricians, pediatricians, anesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.
Promote patient safety through adherence to infection prevention, medication safety, maternal and newborn care standards, and clinical protocols.
Support breastfeeding initiation, newborn bonding, and implementation of family-centered maternity care practices.
Address patient and family concerns and facilitate effective communication regarding care plans and treatment processes.
Administrative Duties:
Coordinate daily operations and workflow within the maternity, labor and delivery, and postpartum units to ensure efficient service delivery.
Assign patient care responsibilities based on patient acuity, staff competency, and workload requirements.
Supervise and support midwives, nurses, and support staff to ensure adherence to professional standards, hospital policies, and clinical guidelines.
Monitor the quality, accuracy, and completeness of clinical documentation and patient records.
Participate in maternal and neonatal admissions, referrals, transfers, discharges, and continuity of care activities.
Ensure proper utilization, maintenance, and availability of maternity and neonatal equipment, supplies, medications, and emergency resources.
Monitor staffing levels and coordinate shift coverage to maintain safe patient care services.
Participate in incident reporting, maternal and perinatal death reviews, root cause analyses, and quality improvement initiatives.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.
Educational Duties:
Provide mentorship, coaching, and clinical guidance to midwives, nurses, students, and newly assigned staff.
Identify training needs and facilitate continuing professional development opportunities related to maternal and newborn health services.
Promote evidence-based midwifery practices and adherence to national and international maternal health guidelines.
Participate in orientation programs, clinical teaching activities, competency assessments, and emergency preparedness drills.
Stay updated with current developments in midwifery practice, maternal and newborn care, patient safety, and healthcare quality improvement.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Midwifery.
Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia
Minimum of 5 years of demonstrable experience in maternal and newborn health services, labor and delivery, maternity care, or related clinical settings.
Training in Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong knowledge of antenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn care, family planning, and reproductive health services.
Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and team management skills.
Excellent clinical assessment, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities in maternal and newborn healthcare.
Proficiency in managing obstetric and neonatal emergencies and coordinating multidisciplinary care.
Strong communication, counseling, interpersonal, and conflict-resolution skills.
Knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, infection prevention, patient safety, and quality improvement principles.
Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and effectively manage resources in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Proficiency in healthcare documentation systems, reporting processes, and performance monitoring.
Strong organizational skills, professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence in maternal and newborn care.
