The Communications Specialist plays a vital role in strengthening the school’s public image, promoting its vision and achievements, and ensuring effective communication among students, parents, staff, and the wider community.

Position Summary

The Communications Specialist is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing communication and public relations strategies that enhance the visibility and reputation of DUKA International School. The role involves managing digital platforms, creating engaging content, coordinating media coverage, and supporting internal and external communications to ensure consistent and professional messaging across all channels.

Job Requirements

Core Areas of Responsibility

1. Communication Strategy & Public Relations

  • Develop and implement the school’s annual communication and public relations strategy. 

  • Design communication initiatives that strengthen relationships between the school and parents, students, and the community.  

  • Ensure consistent, accurate, and professional messaging across all communication channels. 

  • Promote the school’s programs, achievements, events, and institutional values to internal and external audiences. 

2. Digital Media & Website Management

  • Manage and oversee the school’s official digital platforms, including Facebook, Telegram, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and other social media channels. 

  • Create and publish engaging, informative, and up-to-date digital content regularly. 

  • Maintain and update the school website with current news, announcements, events, and academic information. Monitor digital engagement and recommend strategies to improve online visibility and community interaction. 

  • 3. Content Development & Publication

  • Prepare newsletters, magazines, brochures, and other communication materials for parents and stakeholders. 

  • Draft invitation letters, speeches, press releases, event communications, and official announcements. 

  • Produce compelling written and visual content aligned with the school’s brand identity and values. 

  • Ensure high-quality editing, proofreading, and consistency in all published materials. 

  • 4. Event Coverage & Multimedia Coordination

  • Coordinate photography and videography coverage for school programs, celebrations, parent meetings, graduations, sports events, and other activities. 

  • Organize communication and media activities during school events. 

  • Ensure proper documentation, organization, and archiving of multimedia materials. 

  • Support the production of promotional videos and visual storytelling initiatives. 

  • 5. Internal Communication & Crisis Management

  • Facilitate effective internal communication among school leadership, staff, and departments. 

  • Provide timely, professional, and accurate communication during emergencies or crisis situations. 

  • Serve as a communication liaison between school management, employees, parents, and the wider community. 

  • Support initiatives that strengthen school culture and stakeholder engagement. 

  • Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA) in Journalism and Communication, Public Relations, Languages, Theatre Arts, or a related field. 

  • Training or practical experience in photography, videography, editing, and multimedia communication is required. 

  • Experience

  • relations, media, or related fields. 

  • Previous experience working in an educational institution or international school environment is highly preferred. 

  • Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Amharic. 

  • Strong social media management and digital communication skills. 

  • Excellent content writing, editing, and storytelling abilities. 

  • Basic graphic design, photography, videography, and video editing skills. 

  • Strong organizational and event coordination skills. 

  • Ability to work under pressure and manage crisis communication effectively. 

  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and relationship-building skills. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital communication tools.
