About MAG:
MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.
MAG is registered and accredited as a humanitarian mine action NGO in Ethiopia and is in the process of establishing a country office and operations focused on responding to the threat posed by explosive ordnance contamination in northern Ethiopia. Initial planned programming will focus on the delivery of Explosive Ordnance Risk Education, working with local partners, and capacity support to national actors. Further scale-up and expansion of activities to encompass survey and clearance operations is anticipated over the coming months.
About the role:
The Community Liaison Officer (CLO) is responsible for supporting the delivery of MAG Ethiopia's Community Liaison (CL) activities in accordance with MAG Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), Ethiopian National Mine Action Standards (NMAS), and donor requirements.
Working as part of a multi-skilled Community Liaison Team, the CLO contributes to the implementation of Community Liaison, Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE), Explosive Hazard Awareness Training (EHAT), Community Focal Point (CFP) development, Non-Technical Survey (NTS), field-based Explosive Ordnance Contamination Assessment, information management and community engagement activities.
The post holder plays a key role in improving community safety, strengthening humanitarian access, supporting evidence-based operational planning and ensuring that affected communities participate meaningfully in humanitarian mine action activities.
Job Requirements
About you:
The successful candidate will be required to have:
Diploma or Degree in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Education, Geography, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
Experience working with communities.
Good communication skills.
Experience delivering training or community awareness activities.
Ability to work in remote locations.
Good written and spoken English.
Ability to use smartphones, tablets and GPS.
Good computer skills (Word, Excel).
Commitment to humanitarian principles.
Desirable if the applicant has:
Experience in humanitarian mine action.
Experience in Community Liaison or EORE.
Experience conducting NTS.
Experience using ArcGIS Survey123 or Kobo Collect.
Experience working with NGOs.
