Consultancy for Participatory Target Group-Specific Biodiversity Module Development for Schools

NABU Ethiopia is a legally registered, locally governed civil society organization working with government, research institutions, development partners, and communities to promote biodiversity conservation, sustainable natural resource management, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Ethiopia.

Under the SYMBIOTIC Project, NABU Ethiopia invites qualified individual consultants, consulting firms, and eligible public higher education institutions to submit technical and financial proposals for the participatory development, piloting, validation, and localization of biodiversity education modules in English and Amharic for primary and secondary/high-school students, with a particular focus on Kaffa Zone, Southwest Ethiopia Peoples Regional State (SWEPRS).

The purpose of the assignment is to develop practical, learner-centered, age-appropriate, inclusive, and locally relevant biodiversity education modules that strengthen students’ biodiversity knowledge, practical conservation skills, environmental awareness, and positive environmental behavior. The assignment will incorporate participatory and experiential learning approaches, including school environmental clubs, school gardens, local biodiversity knowledge, and practical conservation activities, and will produce bilingual modules, teacher/facilitator guides, and assessment tools.

1.     Scope of the Consultancy and Key Deliverables

The selected consultant/institution will be expected to undertake, among others, the following:

• Conduct relevant desk reviews and stakeholder consultations;

• Develop appropriate biodiversity learning frameworks for primary and secondary/high-school students;

• Develop age-appropriate and locally relevant biodiversity education modules in English and Amharic;

• Integrate experiential and participatory learning approaches, including school environmental clubs, school gardens, local biodiversity and ecological knowledge, and practical conservation activities;

• Engage relevant education, environmental and other stakeholders in the development and localization process;

• Validate the draft modules with selected schools and local partners;

• Incorporate feedback from the validation process; and

• Submit final bilingual modules, teacher/facilitator guides, assessment tools and editable electronic files.

Job Requirements

Key Qualifications

The lead consultant or proposed team should have:

• Advanced degree, preferably MSc or PhD, in biodiversity, ecology, environmental education, curriculum development, education, natural resource management, or a related field.

• Demonstrated experience in developing educational/training materials for primary and/or secondary education.

• Strong knowledge of biodiversity conservation and the Ethiopian education and environmental context.

• Experience in participatory material development, consultation, piloting, and validation.

• Capacity to develop materials in English and Amharic.

• Experience in gender-responsive and inclusive educational approaches.

Duration

10 calendar weeks from the effective date of the contract.
