The Youth Network for Sustainable Development (YNSD) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization founded in 2003 with the vision of empowering Ethiopian youth to become productive, self-reliant, and healthy agents of sustainable development. Our organization focuses on various program areas such as Youth and Women Empowerment, Health and HIV/AIDS, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Environment with a special emphasis on climate change and Emerging Issues.

Youth Network for Sustainable Development (YNSD) in partnership with Mastercard Foundation implements Community Service Program in Addis Ababa, Sodo and Dessie clusters. This Program envisions “equal opportunity for young people to learn and prosper, access to dignified and fulfilling work and contribute to their country’s overall development.”  The Community Service as Pathway to Work (CSPW) initiative aims to contribute to this vision by engaging young people (18 to 34 years) in a structured program of community service, training and by providing linkages to a comprehensive local network of public, private, and civic sector agencies that provide work-related placements and resources. The Program will make every opportunity available to engage differently-abled youth as well as internally displaced persons (IDPs) which are directly impacted by the conflict and other vulnerable groups in the community.

The Driver is responsible for the safe and responsible operation of official vehicles, ensuring the timely and efficient completion of all assigned travel and transport duties. The role involves carrying out routine vehicle maintenance, monitoring servicing schedules, and maintaining accurate logbooks and records related to vehicle use. The Driver systematically documents and shares up-to-date information on road conditions, routes, and locations with colleagues to support smooth organizational operations. In addition to driving, the role includes running official errands, assisting with administrative tasks, and supporting office functions as needed. The Driver is expected to perform all tasks with diligence, punctuality, and in accordance with the guidance and targets set by the line manager.

Key Responsibilities 

1.     Driving:

  • Provides passenger transport in an official YNSD car for program staff, official visitors, consultants, partners, and guests.

  • Runs errands for the project, program or YNSD-Office, e.g., sending letters and messages, paying bills and buying smaller quantities of office supplies.

  • Helps with transporting goods including loading/unloading.

  • Completes the vehicle logbooks correctly and conscientiously in accordance with YNSD standards (P&R).

  • Provide logistical services and proper delivery of materials for workshops and training courses within and outside the YNSD-Office premises.

  • Follow the instruction on the movements from the Logistics Officer and her/his deputy and head of Unit.

2.     Services for vehicles and staffs:

  • Regularly cleans the vehicle interior and exterior part.

  • Be attentive and do a daily vehicle check to make sure the vehicle is running smoothly, and any defaults are addressed on time and reported.

  • Regularly check fuel gauge and refuel the vehicle tank.

  • Checks oil, water, brakes and brake liquid, tire pressure, battery levels and the entire vehicle, monthly or every 5,000 km (whichever is first), headlights, brakes, bodywork for dents etc.

  • Reports the renewal of vehicle insurance and licenses.

  • Reports need for service and carries out minor repairs

  • Immediately reports all involvement of the project or office vehicle in accidents, including minor accidents, damage, loss or theft of vehicle fittings.

  • Uses all available information (including current radio news on traffic conditions) to update daily knowledge of road conditions.

3.     Documentation and Support to other departments:

  • Assists the departments in matters related to the payment to taxes authority.

  • Purchase small items using petty cash and provide support in obtaining bids for procurements.

  • Delivers and picks up documents to YNSD, on behalf of the organization.

  • Participate in the entire process of vehicle registration (initial registration and documentation of official vehicles, tax and insurance issues with project vehicles), new registrations, and insurance.

  • Involve and assist with processing accident insurance against local insurance companies with National Office.

  • Supports in the preparation, logistics, and organization of events, i.e., delivering, setting up, and dismantling of WS equipment. 

  • Other duties: Perform other duties, as assigned by the supervisor to support program objectives

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • 12th or 10th grade education certificate

  •  A valid Public 1 driving license

  • Defensive driving skills

  • Basic knowledge of general mechanics

  • Ability to pass driving test (visual and practical) in the country in question

  • Basic knowledge of MS Office and skilled internet user.

  • Willing to work long hours, evenings and weekends, and to travel away from Addis Ababa

Professional experience

  • At least 5 years of work experience as a driver with references

  • No major accidents in the past 3 years

  • Experience in working with governmental structures, international organizations, NGOs and/or research institutes.

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • High level of motivation, proactivity, self-discipline, integrity and accountability.

  • Preferably First Aid training.

  • Discipline and punctuality and Resilience and patience

  • A good knowledge of the road traffic law

  • Familiarity with the city

  • Appropriate appearance (friendly manner with all passengers)

  • Willingness to up-skill as required by the tasks to be performed
