Key Roles and Responsibilities

• Emergency Response

• Prepare, train, and respond to emergency incidents, including:

• Fire incidents and structural firefighting.

• Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) operations.

• Medical emergencies and first aid response.

• Hazardous materials incidents, including cyanide spills and chemical emergencies.

• Rescue operations including:

• Motor vehicle rescue.

• Water rescue.

• Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) rescue.

• High-angle and rope rescue.

Fire Prevention & Emergency Preparedness

• Conduct daily inspections of fire appliances and rescue vehicles.

• Perform daily inspections of emergency response equipment.

• Test fire alarm systems and water bowser pressure.

• Inspect fire suppression systems and fire hydrants.

• Conduct water pressure checks.

• Inspect evacuation routes, emergency assembly points, and signage.

• Complete inspection reports and maintain accurate records.

Snake Handling

• Safely capture and relocate snakes in accordance with approved procedures.

• Respond to wildlife-related incidents to ensure personnel safety.

Grass Fire & Wildland Fire Prevention

• Implement back-burning schedules where required.

• Conduct perimeter fence line inspections to reduce wildfire risks.

• Support seasonal bushfire and grassfire prevention programs.

Cyanide Emergency Response

• Provide dedicated cyanide emergency response.

• Conduct cyanide PPE and emergency response training.

• Standby during cyanide deliveries and mixing activities.

• Respond to cyanide incidents during transportation, unloading, mixing, and plant operations.

Training & Awareness

• Deliver toolbox talks on fire safety and emergency preparedness.

• Conduct fire extinguisher inspections and practical training during employee induction programs.

• Promote emergency response awareness throughout the operation.

Aviation Safety

• Conduct Aircraft landing sites, runway inspections pre and post landing of aircrafts.

• Inspect runway fire prevention equipment and emergency readiness for aviation related operations.

Post-Incident Activities

• Clean, inspect, and maintain emergency response equipment after incidents.

• Record damaged equipment and maintain inventory.

• Recharge batteries and replenish fuel supplies.

• Assist with incident reporting and documentation.

• Participate in incident investigations and post-incident debriefings.

• Recommend improvements to emergency response procedures and plans.

Safety

• Always ensure a safe working environment.

• Perform daily safety inspections and emergency readiness checks.

• Report hazards, unsafe conditions, and non-conformances immediately.

• Respond effectively to emergency incidents and assist in preventing accidents.

• Participate in daily toolbox meetings and Visible Felt Safety Leadership (VFSL) activities.

• Comply with all company Health, Safety, Environmental, and Emergency Response procedures.

Productivity

• Maintain operational readiness of all emergency response equipment and vehicles.

• Ensure emergency response equipment is inspected, serviced, and available for immediate deployment.

• Maintain accurate inspection, maintenance, and incident records.

• Support continuous improvement of emergency response capability.

• Participate in emergency drills and simulation exercises.

• Achieve emergency response readiness objectives while minimizing equipment downtime and resource wastage.

Compliance

• Comply with applicable Ethiopian legislation, mining regulations, and emergency response standards.

• Ensure compliance with company Health, Safety, Environmental, and Emergency Response procedures.

• Maintain operational readiness in accordance with site emergency response plans and regulatory requirements.

• Provide feedback on Policies and Procedures post incidents to enhance the ERT capabilities and responsiveness to incidents.

Team Development

• Build strong working relationships across departments.

• Mentor and support emergency response team members.

• Participate in emergency response training and competency development.

• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in emergency preparedness and response.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Diploma or Certificate in Fire & Rescue, Emergency Management, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline.

• Firefighter certification from a recognized institution is preferred.

• Current First Aid certification.

• SCBA competency certification.

• Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination.

Experience

• Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in industrial, mining, oil & gas, aviation, or municipal emergency services.

• Experience in mine emergency response and hazardous materials response is highly desirable.

• Experience with cyanide emergency response will be an advantage.

Key Competencies & Skills

• Fire prevention and firefighting techniques.

• Emergency response systems and Incident Command System (ICS).

• Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) response.

• Rescue operations including rope, vehicle, and water rescue.

• Fire protection systems and emergency equipment maintenance.

• Occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental legislation.

Other Requirement

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

• Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

• High level of physical fitness suitable for emergency response duties.

• Valid driving licence (heavy vehicle licence is an advantage).

• Snake handling, HAZMAT, rope rescue, water rescue, and aviation firefighting qualifications will be considered advantageous.

Job Requirements The successful candidate should possess a Diploma or Certificate in Fire & Rescue, Emergency Management, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related discipline from a recognized institution. Firefighter certification from a recognized institution is preferred.
