The Role

The Geotechnical Technician supports the Geotechnical Engineer in maintaining the safe and stable operation of open pit slopes, waste dumps, and other mine excavations. The role is responsible for collecting and managing geotechnical data, monitoring ground conditions and instrumentation, identifying geotechnical hazards, and assisting with the implementation of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP). The position contributes to preventing slope failures, rockfalls, and other ground instability hazards while supporting safe, compliant, and efficient mining operations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Geotechnical Monitoring and Data Collection

  • Assist the Geotechnical Engineer in conducting daily inspections of open pits, waste dumps, haul roads, and other mining areas.

  • Conduct geological and geotechnical mapping, structural mapping, and geotechnical core logging.

  • Collect rock, soil, and groundwater samples for laboratory testing.

  • Install, inspect, maintain, and monitor geotechnical instrumentation, including piezometers, prisms, extensometers, slope stability radar systems, and data loggers.

  • Collect, validate, and maintain monitoring data from field observations and instrumentation.

  • Monitor ground movement and groundwater conditions and promptly report abnormal trends or instability.

2. Ground Control and Risk Management

  • Support the implementation and continuous improvement of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).

  • Identify, assess, and communicate geotechnical hazards, including unstable slopes, rockfalls, and ground movement.

  • Provide timely geotechnical information to Mining Operations, Drill and Blast, Planning, and other stakeholders to support safe production.

  • Participate in hazard identification, risk assessments, incident investigations, and corrective action implementation.

  • Assist the Geotechnical Engineer in developing practical ground control recommendations.

3. Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Compile and maintain accurate geotechnical monitoring databases.

  • Analyse field observations and instrumentation data to identify changes in ground performance.

  • Prepare daily, weekly, monthly, and incident-specific geotechnical reports.

  • Maintain complete and accurate technical records to support engineering decisions and regulatory compliance.

4. Safety, Compliance, and Operational Excellence

  • Promote and demonstrate Allied Gold's Safety Vision and Values in all work activities.

  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with the Ground Control Management Plan, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), company standards, and applicable Ethiopian mining legislation.

  • Conduct routine workplace and geotechnical safety inspections.

  • Identify hazards, report risks promptly, and assist in implementing appropriate control measures.

  • Participate in daily production meetings, safety meetings, toolbox talks, and emergency response activities.

  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of operational reports and documentation.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance geotechnical monitoring, operational efficiency, and mine safety.

5. Teamwork and Operational Support

  • Work closely with the Geotechnical Engineer, Mining Operations, Survey, Drill and Blast, and Planning teams to achieve operational objectives.

  • Support effective communication of geotechnical risks and operational constraints.

  • Promote teamwork, collaboration, and knowledge sharing across multidisciplinary teams.

  • Assist in training and mentoring junior personnel and contractors on geotechnical monitoring procedures and ground awareness.

  • Plan and organize daily work activities to ensure efficient use of time, equipment, and resources.

  • Identify opportunities to improve monitoring processes, reduce operational costs, and minimize waste while maintaining high technical standards.

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Education

  •  Bachelor's Degree or MSc in Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, or a related Earth Science discipline.

Experience

  • 1–3 years of practical field experience in geotechnical engineering within an open pit mining operation, quarry, or large civil earthworks project.

Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of rock mechanics, rock mass classification, and slope stability principles.

  • Knowledge of geotechnical monitoring systems and instrumentation.

  • Understanding of geological and hydrological factors affecting pit stability.

  • Knowledge of mining industry standards, ground control practices, and safety requirements.

  • Familiarity with open pit blasting practices and their influence on slope performance.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for reporting and data management.

  • Ability to use surveying equipment, geological mapping tools, GPS equipment, and basic geotechnical software.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to prepare accurate technical reports and maintain detailed records.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills in Amharic and  English other language proficiency is an advantage.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while meeting deadlines.
