Position Summary

The Human Resource Officer is responsible for implementing and managing the full range of HR functions — from recruitment and onboarding to performance management, training, and compliance. This role ensures that DUKA International School attracts, retains, and develops exceptional staff members who embody our mission and values.

The HR Officer also ensures that all HR policies and practices are compliant with Ethiopian labor laws, reflect international best practices in education, and support the well-being and professional growth of all staff.

Core Areas of Responsibility

1. Recruitment & Staffing

  • Manage the end-to-end recruitment process: posting vacancies, screening candidates, coordinating interviews, and finalizing hires.

  • Maintain an updated database of qualified local and international teaching and non-teaching candidates.

  • Ensure recruitment practices align with equal opportunity principles and school values.

2. Onboarding & Orientation

  • Coordinate comprehensive onboarding programs for new staff, ensuring smooth integration into the school community.

  • Prepare and manage employment contracts, job descriptions, and personnel files.

  • Facilitate probationary period reviews with department heads.

3. Performance Management

  • Support the implementation of performance appraisal systems for teaching and non-teaching staff.

  • Maintain performance documentation and track timelines for evaluations.

  • Advise managers on performance improvement plans where necessary.

4. Staff Development & Training

  • Identify training needs in collaboration with department heads.

  • Coordinate internal and external professional development programs.

  • Track and evaluate training outcomes for continuous improvement.

5. Employee Relations & Engagement

  • Serve as a point of contact for staff concerns, grievances, and conflict resolution.

  • Promote a positive and inclusive workplace culture.

  • Support initiatives that enhance staff morale, engagement, and retention.

6. Compensation, Benefits & Payroll Coordination

  • Maintain accurate payroll-related data and work with the Finance team to ensure timely, accurate salary payments.

  • Oversee administration of benefits, allowances, and leave entitlements.

  • Monitor compensation structures to ensure internal equity and market competitiveness.

7. Compliance & Policy Management

  • Ensure all HR practices comply with Ethiopian labor laws and relevant school policies.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of labor legislation and advise leadership on changes.

  • Regularly review and update the HR policy manual.

8. HR Data Management & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and confidential HR records in both physical and digital formats.

  • Prepare HR-related reports and analytics for the Head of Finance & Operations and Board.

  • Track HR metrics such as turnover, absenteeism, and recruitment timelines.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred).

  • At least 4 years of experience in HR roles, preferably in education or a service-focused organization.

  • Strong knowledge of Ethiopian labor laws and HR best practices.

  • Proficiency in HR information systems and MS Office Suite.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
