The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Development and social services commission/EECMY DASSC is faith-based and non-profit national NGOs envisions to see just, caring and prosperous society. One of commission’s branch office, south central Ethiopia branch located in Hawassa has been operating various development programs and projects in Sidama Region and some woredas of the west Arsi Zone of Oromia region. Currently, the south-central branch office is implementing over 15 development projects in the areas of resilient building, education, youth and child development, women empowerment and inclusive development, peace building& humanitarian development.

The branch office in collaboration with Water to Thrive has been implementing the project entitled “WASH Improvement Project” in Aroresa and Chire districts of Sidama region. The project aimed to realize increased access to safe water and improved sanitation and hygiene for population living in targeted districts of Sidama region. Hence, EECMY DASSC SCES BO, in collaboration with local government, the water, mines and irrigation offices, and the community, has achieved remarkable results in improving access to sustainable, safe and adequate water benefiting thousands of HHs. Likewise, the project has contributed to increased access to and use of improved Sanitation facilities in targeted communities and villages. Thus, branch office is looking to recruit hygiene sanitation promoter for successful implementation of planned activities of the project.

General Job summary

The hygiene sanitation promoter shall be responsible to assist the water, sanitation and hygiene promotion activities in WASH project and community mobilization in all targeted districts. The position involves training, mobilizing and monitoring of community/sanitation agents and WASH committee members with frequent trips to the project sites.

Job specific roles and responsibilities

The specific roles and responsibilities belong to hygiene sanitation promoter but not limited to the following areas are: -

➢ Planning hygiene sanitation promotion activities to mobilize communities through different behavioral change approaches such as CLTSH, PLA and community conversation

➢ Ensure community participation in various activities and suggest best experiences on managing/ operating & maintaining their water system.

➢ Strength WASHCOs by providing capacity building training and follow up on hygiene sanitation practices such as toilet construction, HHs level…

➢ Organize hygiene promotion campaigns to the communities on key hygiene messages.

➢ Identify, design and develop materials/manuals on appropriate hygiene promotion and community sanitation; conduct baseline survey and need assessment concerning sanitation and hygiene practice and outbreaks.

➢ Collect data from the Woreda Health office, water utility office, community representative, and WASHCOs and prepare regular reports on activities and WASH conditions for monitoring

➢ Liaise with communities, local authorities and other agencies regularly to ensure coordination and effective implementation activities regarding hygiene promotion/sanitation

➢ Collect data and statistics concerning issues that are related with water & sanitation and prepare and submit reports to immediate supervisor on daily, monthly and quarterly basis.

➢ Ensure active community participation in the design and implementation of WASH services and facilities.

➢ Develops quality, timely reports with pictures and submits to immediate supervisor

➢ Maintains regular communication and interaction with local government office partners, worker-level water experts and technicians

➢ Analyses hygiene sanitation promotion implementation reports to ensure that all activities are completed in full compliance with donor-partner requirements

Job Requirements

• Degree/Diploma in public health, Hygiene and sanitation, Environmental Health, related field of study

• At least 4 years of experience for diploma holder and 2-years’ experience for degree holder with experiences of hygiene sanitation promotion, community mobilization and triggering.

• Demonstrated practical experience in CLTSH, PLA approach and addressing public health issues.

• Knowledge of project Cycle management is an asset.

• Flexible and committed to work under pressure.

• Having demonstrated experience to work with community, government, other partners and structures is essential.

• Experience in NGO will be an asset.

Job Requirements The successful candidate should possess a Degree or Diploma in Public Health, Hygiene and Sanitation, Environmental Health, or a related field. Diploma holders should have a minimum of 4 years of relevant professional experience, while degree holders should have at least 2 years of relevant experience in hygiene and sanitation promotion, community mobilization, and triggering activities. Strong communication, community engagement, facilitation, teamwork, and problem-solving skills are also required.
