The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a global service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world. Since 2004, GIZ has been a reliable and trusted partner of the African Union (AU) to enhance inclusive growth and sustainable development on the African continent in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. With more than 200 staff, GIZ African Union cooperates with the AU Commission, as well as the AU’s specialised institutions and agencies, such as the Development Agency AUDA-NEPAD, at continental, regional and national level in more than 35 member states. Key areas of engagement include Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention, Governance and Migration, Sustainable Economic Growth and Employment, as well as Health and Social Development.

The project “Support to the African Union (AU) on Labour Migration and Free Movement” of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH cooperates with the African Union Commission (AUC) to promote the implementation of continental and regional migration policies with a focus on labour migration and free movement in Africa. The project closely works with relevant AU bodies including the AUC Directorate of Health and Humanitarian Affairs and the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC), with Regional Economic Communities (RECs), individual AU Member States and with other partners such as civil society organizations (CSO). Measures include research, dialogue, and capacity building.

The project has recently been commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is in its second year of a three-year term that commenced in January 2022. The Administrative Assistant Intern will assist the project team members with research, knowledge management, communication, monitoring and evaluation.

Responsibilities

Research, Monitoring, Evaluation and Knowledge Management:

  • Support to background research and data gathering including the development of concept notes, agendas and other background documents.

  • Analyze reports and extract relevant information for communication, and knowledge management. 

  • Coordinate with colleagues to monitor and evaluate the on-going and implemented activities 

  • Assist in keeping the knowledge management system up to date (entering and organizing data on the Data Management System (DMS) and on MS Teams) 

Communication:

  • Assist in drafting communication content and managing social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube). 

  • Assist with copywriting, proofing, and updating as needed. 

  • Translations of documents (depending on language skills from English to French using available online tools) 

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, MS Teams), Word, Excel)

  • Experience with communication and social media (content creation, ability to identify windows of opportunity for social media engagement and project activity amplification

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to analyze reports and documents and extract relevant information

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and to anticipate next steps or needs

  • Well-developed interpersonal and team working skills; ability to operate effectively in teams; initiative, persistence and positive attitude.

  • Ability to deal sensitively in multicultural environments

Professional experience

  • A university degree in an appropriate field

  • Excellent command of spoken and written English.

  • Interest in migration-related issues on the African continent and globally; an understanding of gender and youth issues in Africa is an asset.

  • First practical experiences in the field of international cooperation are an asset.

  • Be based in Addis Ababa

Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • Proficiency in French or another AU language would be an asset
