Purpose of the Job

The purpose of this job is to oversee engineering and maintenance services to ensure operational efficiency, equipment reliability, and workforce productivity. The position is responsible for planning, organizing, and optimizing maintenance operations to minimize downtime and maximize output while fostering a culture of accountability, leadership, and continuous improvement. This role requires a strong ability to collaborate across departments, align engineering functions with business goals, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.

Major duties and Responsibilities

• Assists in the development of strategies, policies and procedures for effective production operation and ensures their proper execution.

• Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and control the activities of engineering and maintenance services and ensures minimum downtime and maximum productivity.

• Leads and mentors engineering and maintenance teams, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability.

• Develops and implements maintenance schedules for critical equipment and infrastructure and ensures timely and cost-effective repairs and upgrades.

• Works closely with production, operations, and other departments to align engineering strategies with organizational needs.

• Collaborates with procurement teams to source and evaluate materials, tools, and equipment.

• Ensures all maintenance and engineering activities adhere to safety regulations and industry standards.

• Conducts risk assessments and implements preventative measures to enhance workplace safety.

• Oversees environmental compliance initiatives related to energy efficiency and sustainability.

• Develops long-term maintenance strategies aligned with business goals.

• Prepares reports on maintenance and engineering performance, including key metrics and financial analysis.

• Leads and mentors engineering and maintenance teams, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability and oversees staff development, including training programs and succession planning.

• Plays vital role in staff development; motivates, encourages and inspires the workforce under his/her supervision and exercises leadership to ensure that employees are contributing their best effort for the attainment of goals and objectives the company.

• Manages properly and keeps control of the fixed assets, IT resources, information and other assets of the department and conducts regular/periodic verifications as deemed necessary

• Set outs appropriate mechanism/s and periodically monitors, reviews, and evaluates group as well as individual performances to check whether groups as well as individual goals are met as targeted.

• Conducts periodic employee performance appraisals and provides them with reasonable feedback to ensure further improvements in future performance.

• Ensures that strategies, policies, procedures, plans, annual targets, etc. are clearly and timely disseminated to employees under his/her supervision

• Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Job Requirements

Required Knowledge and skills (Competence)

Education

• BSc in electrical/mechanical engineering.           

Experience

• 8 years of relevant work experience in a 24 hrs. production environment preferably in glass factories out of which 5 years in managerial position.

Skills

• Expertise in diagnosing and resolving technical issues to ensure smooth operations.

• Strong understanding of glass production, equipment, and associated engineering principles.

• Proficiency in operating, maintaining, and upgrading machinery used in glass manufacturing.

• Ability to analyze complex issues, identify solutions, and implement effective strategies for process optimization.

• Demonstrated capability to lead teams, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and oversee workforce development.

• Good verbal and written communication skills both in the Amharic and English languages.
