1.Position Summary:
ROMEL seeks a curious, analytical, and strategic Marketing R&D Officer to serve as the central intelligence hub for our business. This role is designed to close the critical loop between the market, our product development & our marketing strategy. You will be responsible for gathering market intelligence, understanding customer needs, analyzing competitor actions, and translating these insights into clear recommendations for new product development, product improvements, and targeted marketing campaigns.
2. Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Market Intelligence & Competitive Analysis:
Establish & lead a weekly Competitor Intelligence Program, tracking key competitors on pricing, new product launches, promotional offers, credit terms & distribution tactics.
Conduct regular mystery shopping and trade audits at competitor and partner outlets to assess merchandising, stock availability, and sales practices.
Analyze import/export data and industry reports to identify macroeconomic trends affecting the electrical and lighting sectors in Ethiopia.
Maintain a live competitor database & provide actionable alerts to the Marketing Director and sales teams.
B. Customer & Market Research:
Design and execute quantitative and qualitative research projects, including customer surveys, focus group discussions, and in-depth interviews with B2B clients, electricians, architects, and end-consumers.
Systematically collect, categorize, and analyze customer complaints & feedback from showrooms & sales teams to identify recurring product or service issues.
Lead initiatives to uncover unmet needs & emerging trends in lighting, finishes, and electrical solutions.
Conduct outlet and channel surveys to map distribution gaps and identify potential new agent locations in Addis Ababa & key regional towns.
Measure brand awareness, brand perception, and campaign recall through structured research.
C. New Product Development (NPD) Support:
Work closely with the Factory Manager and Brand Manager to provide market-driven insights for the New Product Development pipeline.
Organize product testing and feedback sessions with key influencers (electricians, contractors) before full-scale launch.
Analyze the performance of newly launched products and recommend adjustments to marketing mix or product features.
D. Reporting & Strategic Input:
Synthesize findings into clear, concise, and visually engaging reports (e.g., Monthly Market Intelligence Report, Quarterly Consumer Insights Summary).
Present research findings & strategic recommendations to senior management.
Support the development of the annual marketing plan with data-driven insights on target segments, positioning, and growth opportunities.
Conduct regular audits of ROMEL's own product merchandising, pricing, and stock visibility at partner outlets and distributor points-of-sale against agreed standards.
Collect photographic and video evidence of competitor and ROMEL product placement, promotions, and shelf-share during all market visits for analysis.
Gather real-time, on-the-ground intelligence on unofficial pricing & discounting practices happening at the channel level.
E. Routine Field Marketing Activities:
Job Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Statistics, Economics, or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.
Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in market research, business intelligence or product management. Experience in the manufacturing, retail, FMCG or electrical & lighting sectors is highly advantageous.
Proven expertise in designing research methodologies, writing questionnaires, conducting interviews, and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data.
High proficiency in data analysis tools (Microsoft Excel is essential; knowledge of SPSS, Power BI, or similar is a strong plus).
Exceptional analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Must be proactive, detail-oriented, and possess a deep curiosity about consumer behavior and market dynamics with the ability to tell a story with data.
