The Medical Laboratory Technologist is responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory tests and procedures to support the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and prevention of diseases. The role involves specimen collection and processing, laboratory analysis, quality control, equipment maintenance, result reporting, and collaboration with healthcare professionals to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely laboratory services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clinical Duties:

    • Perform laboratory testing and analysis in accordance with established procedures, quality standards, and safety protocols.

    • Conduct laboratory examinations in areas including Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Serology, Immunology, Blood Bank, Molecular Diagnostics, Parasitology, and Urinalysis as assigned.

    • Collect, receive, verify, label, process, and prepare patient specimens for testing and analysis.

    • Ensure proper handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of specimens according to laboratory standards.

    • Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.

    • Verify and validate laboratory test results before reporting and promptly communicate critical values according to established protocols.

    • Perform internal quality control procedures and participate in external quality assessment programs.

    • Identify abnormal results and escalate concerns to supervisors or pathologists as appropriate.

    • Ensure compliance with biosafety, infection prevention, and laboratory safety requirements.

    • Maintain accuracy, reliability, and confidentiality of patient information and laboratory data.

  • Administrative Duties:

    • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely laboratory records, worksheets, quality control logs, equipment maintenance records, and test reports.

    • Document and report laboratory findings in accordance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.

    • Monitor laboratory inventory and ensure the availability of reagents, consumables, and laboratory supplies.

    • Participate in procurement planning and stock management activities.

    • Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of laboratory equipment and promptly report malfunctions.

    • Adhere to laboratory policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), accreditation requirements, and quality management systems.

    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, laboratory audits, proficiency testing, and accreditation activities.

    • Assist in maintaining laboratory cleanliness, organization, and biosafety compliance.

  • Educational Duties:

    • Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory staff, interns, students, and trainees as assigned.

    • Participate in continuing professional development, competency assessments, and training programs.

    • Support implementation of new laboratory technologies, methodologies, and testing procedures.

    • Stay updated with current laboratory practices, scientific advancements, regulatory requirements, and quality standards.

    • Participate in laboratory meetings, case discussions, and quality review activities.

 

Job Requirements

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technology, or a related field.

  • Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia

  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in a clinical, hospital, diagnostic, or specialized laboratory setting.

  • Experience in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank, Molecular Diagnostics, or related laboratory disciplines is highly desirable.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory testing methodologies, diagnostic procedures, quality assurance, and quality control principles.

  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining laboratory analyzers, diagnostic equipment, and laboratory information systems.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and precision in laboratory testing and reporting.

  • Knowledge of biosafety practices, infection prevention measures, and laboratory safety standards.

  • Ability to interpret laboratory results and identify abnormal findings requiring further review or escalation.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with healthcare professionals and laboratory team members.

  • Proficiency in healthcare documentation systems, laboratory information systems (LIS), and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, accountability, and commitment to quality laboratory services.
