Laboratory Technologist perform a variety of laboratory tests and procedures to assist physicians in diagnosing, monitoring, treating and preventing disease. Laboratory Technologist perform clinical laboratory testing in areas of Hematology, Coagulation, Clinical Chemistry, Immunohematology, Microbiology, Molecular, Serology, Immunology, pathology and operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

I. Specimen Collection, Handling and Processing

  • Monitors outpatient and Referral test orders

  • Troubleshoots problems related to specimens and test orders and maintains documentation of such problems and corrective action taken

  • Ensures that specimens are collected, received, accessioned, and delivered to the appropriate unit in a timely manner

II. Test Performance

  • Perform a variety of laboratory tests in accordance with established policies and procedures for diagnosis and treatment of patients, quality control verification, and proficiency testing evaluation

  • Prepares reagents properly, minimizes wastes, and considers cost-effectiveness in the use of supplies  Performs quality control as required.

  • Troubleshoots problems occurring during test performance and documents problems, corrective actions, and resolutions

  • Follows laboratory policy for data retrieval, record keeping, requisition and reporting

  • Notifies Laboratory Manager or QACM of problems occurring during the test performance that would affect patient result

III. Test Result Reporting

  • Manages laboratory generated information to enable effective, timely, accurate, and cost-effective reporting of patient data

  • Participates in quality control and quality assurance activities

  • Recognize out of control values, takes corrective action in accordance with laboratory procedures and notify others of changes

  • Report, review and authorize laboratory results according to standard operating procedures

  • Report critical (panic) values or unusual results in accordance with established policy. IV. Instrument Related Responsibilities

  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and calibration on instrument according to SOP

  • Performs method validation/verification studies as needed

  • Troubleshoots instruments as necessary and maintains proper documentation of problems, corrective action, and resolutions

  • Ensures proper functioning of instruments before release of patient results

  • Notifies Laboratory Manager/QACM of instrument malfunction

  • Utilizes all supplies and equipment in an appropriate and cost – effective and efficient manner

Job Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science.

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-4 years of experience in a clinical laboratory.

  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and analytical skills.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Competencies:

  • Computer literacy required

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to complete work assignment accurately and in a timely manner

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently when require
