Since beginning operations in Ethiopia in 2013, IHS has implemented a range of humanitarian programs focused on emergency response, child and youth protection, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), education, food security, livelihoods, and support for refugees and internally displaced populations. The organization works in collaboration with government bodies, UN agencies, NGOs, and community partners to create protective environments and promote positive socio-economic change in conflict-affected and underserved regions of the country.

Supervises: MHPSS Officers,

Type of Employment- Four Months Contract with possibility of extension based on fund availability 

ROLE PURPOSE: 

The MHPSS Coordinator is responsible for leading the design, implementation, and quality assurance of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) interventions within the program. The role ensures the delivery of integrated, survivor-centered, and culturally appropriate MHPSS services in line with national guidelines and international standards. The Coordinator provides technical leadership, supervises MHPSS staff, strengthens referral pathways, and ensures effective coordination with protection, health, and other relevant sectors to promote the psychosocial well-being and resilience of affected populations. 

Key Areas of Accountability

1. Project Management

  • Lead the planning, implementation, and monitoring of MHPSS activities in line with quality standards, community needs, and organizational objectives.

  • Ensure services are culturally appropriate, accessible, and aligned with humanitarian and protection principles.

2. Technical Supervision & Capacity Building

  • Provide continuous technical supervision, mentoring, and coaching to MHPSS staff and CFS Animators

  • Organize and facilitate trainings on Psychological First Aid (PFA), basic counseling skills, stress management, safeguarding, and related topics.

  • Conduct regular case reviews to ensure adherence to ethical standards and best practices.

  • Promote staff wellbeing and implement structured supervision to prevent burnout and secondary trauma.

  • Standardize CFS and WGSS with the minimum CP standards & IASC Guidelines

3. Strategy & Program Development

  • Develop and update MHPSS strategies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and technical guidelines.

  • Contribute to proposal development, program design, and strategic planning for program expansion.

4. Coordination & Networking

  • Strengthen referral pathways with local authorities, health facilities, protection actors, and partner organizations to ensure access to specialized services.

  • Represent the organization in MHPSS, Protection, and Health coordination forums and clusters like MHPSS working groups.

  • Promote inter-agency collaboration and ensure complementarity of services.

5. Monitoring, Evaluation & Reporting

  • Oversee data collection, analysis, and reporting of MHPSS indicators to assess program effectiveness and impact.

  • Develop monitoring tools and ensure accurate and confidential documentation of cases and services.

  • Conduct needs assessments and contribute to evidence-based programming.

  • Prepare timely internal and donor reports.

6. Team Leadership & Compliance

  • Lead, manage, and mentor the MHPSS team, fostering a supportive and professional work environment.

  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding, PSEA, child protection, and confidentiality policies.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

  • BA Degree and above in mental health, Psychiatry, Clinical health, Psychology, or related to Mental health fields.

  • Minimum 3 years and above related professional experience in the field area. 

  • Previous working experience with in humanitarian, emergency, or development settings, ideally within INGO.

  • Strong knowledge of international protection in the humanitarian context.

  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of IASC guidelines on MHPSS in emergency settings and, community-based approaches.

  • Communication: Proven ability to coordinate, with diverse, stakeholders and work collaboratively, within multi-sectoral teams. 

  • Computer knowledge and skill (Word, Excel, Power Point)

  • High confidentiality, respect and non-discriminatory attitude

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Strong training and facilitation skills

  • Strong analytical and report writing skills

  • Strong planning and organizational skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and as part of a team

Competencies: (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

Mandatory: Fluency in written and spoken English

                   : Knowledge of the local language(Tigrigna)
