Scope of responsibility:
Support MSF maternal and newborn health activities within a Ministry of Health (MOH) facility by strengthening the quality of antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal and newborn care services. The role focuses on clinical supervision, capacity building, and systems strengthening to improve maternal and newborn outcomes in line with MOH guidelines and MSF protocols.
Accountabilities:
Key responsibilities include:
Oversee antenatal care (ANC) services to ensure provision of comprehensive, quality, and respectful care, including early identification of high‑risk pregnancies, appropriate screening, documentation, counselling, referral, management of labor, management of emergency obstetric complications, safe delivery, SGBV, family planning (FP) and postnatal care (PNC) follow-ups.
Provide supportive supervision and on‑the‑job mentoring to MoH midwives across ANC, labour, delivery, postnatal, and newborn services
Strengthen midwives competencies in:
With support from the MWAM ensure proper Labour monitoring, including correct and consistent use of the partograph by the MOH midwives.
Support team in early identification and initial management of maternal and newborn complications (e.g. PPH, eclampsia, sepsis, prolonged labour) and timely referral.
Support Midwives implement Active Management of the Third Stage of Labour (AMTSL)
Support midwives in immediate newborn care, including Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) and Kangaroo Mother care (KMC) for preterm and low birth weight babies.
Support midwives in immediate postpartum care for the mother and baby
Ensure effective continuity of care between ANC, delivery, postnatal, and newborn services, including linkage of newborns to early vaccination and follow‑up care.
Develop, update, and support implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for obstetric and newborn care in line with MoH and MSF guidelines.
Ensure availability, completeness, and correct use of emergency kits for eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), and newborn resuscitation; conduct regular checks and support drills.
Promote and monitor infection prevention and control (IPC) practices, including appropriate waste segregation in ANC and maternity units.
Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation, including use of partographs, maternity and ANC registers, and postnatal records.
In collaboration with the MWAM compile and submit weekly and monthly activity reports and support the use of routine data for quality improvement.
Prepare and manage monthly duty rosters for midwifery staff in coordination with MoH counterparts.
Promote respectful, woman‑centered maternity care, teamwork, and effective communication within the maternity and ANC teams.
Work collaboratively with MoH leadership and MSF staff to support sustainable capacity building and health system strengthening.
Organize routine maternity meetings in collaboration with the MWAM

Job Requirements
Education:
Diploma in Midwifery (or any Diploma recognized in the country and /or the Ministry of Health to practice as such).
Valid license or registration to practice as a midwife with the relevant national regulatory body in Ethiopia
Experience:
Minimum 2 years experience as midwife in antenatal, maternity, and labour ward services
Experience in supervision, mentoring, or training is an asset
Strong skills in emergency obstetric and newborn care
Experience in low‑resource or humanitarian settings is desirable
Languages:
High level command oral and written English; Afan Oromo highly desirable
Knowledge:
Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
Skills and Competences:
Strong clinical, supervisory, and mentoring skills
Ability to work effectively within MoH systems
Good organizational, reporting, and data‑use skills
Commitment to respectful, woman‑centered care
Cultural sensitivity and adaptability
