Positive Action for Development (PAD) is one of the most vibrant and expanding Ethiopian residents' Civil Society Organizations in Ethiopia. We are a results-oriented civil society organization that implements efficient, effective, and sustainable charitable organizations in Ethiopia.

Positive Action for Development (PAD) is currently undertaking a dramatic scale-up of intervention focusing on urban destitute peace building and democratization, child protection, Youth Development, Migrant returnees, health, and livelihood development low low-income and vulnerable women, children, youth, and adults in Ethiopia. This includes expanding PAD intervention into different parts of the country, including Addis Ababa, Amhara, Oromia, Harari, and Somali regional state in Ethiopia.

Overall Responsibility

A nurse is responsible for providing basic medical care, health education, and support services to shelter residents, particularly those affected by medical illness and trauma. This may involve assessing health needs, administering medications, managing common illnesses and injuries, and ensuring proper hygiene and sanitation within the shelter.

Roles and Key Responsibilities:

  • Health Assessment and Care: Conducting assessments to identify health needs, providing basic medical care, managing common illnesses and injuries, and referring patients to specialized care when necessary.

  • Health Education: Providing education on hygiene, sanitation, disease prevention, and other health topics to improve the overall health and well-being of shelter residents.

  • Medication Management: Administering medications as prescribed by a doctor and managing medication storage and distribution.

  • Observation and Monitoring: Monitoring the health status of residents, including vital signs, and reporting any concerning changes to appropriate personnel.

  • Hygiene and Sanitation: Ensuring proper hygiene practices within the shelter, including hand washing and personal hygiene, to prevent the spread of infections.

  • Support Services: Providing emotional and psychosocial support to residents, assisting with daily living activities, and ensuring a safe and stable environment.

  • Documentation: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of patient care and health status.

  • Collaboration: Collaborating with other shelter staff, medical personnel, and community organizations to provide comprehensive support to residents

  • Applying basic first aid.

  • Assisting clients in obtaining special diets by coordinating with the food service provider

  • Performs any other activities assigned to you by your immediate supervisor

Knowledge: Basic medical knowledge:

  • Understanding of common illnesses, injuries, and first aid. 

  • Knowledge of hygiene and sanitation:

  • Understanding how to prevent the spread of diseases in a crowded environment. 

  • Knowledge of available resources:

  • Understanding of local healthcare providers, social services, and other support networks. 

  • Understanding of trauma and its impact:

  • Understanding the emotional and psychological effects of trauma, displacement, and potential exposure to violence. 

  • Knowledge of culturally competent care:

  • Understanding the cultural and social norms of the population served, to provide culturally appropriate care. 

  • Assessment and procedural skills:

  • Performing basic physical assessments, taking vital signs, administering medications, and providing wound care. 

  • Client support and health education:

  • Providing emotional support, counseling, and educating individuals on healthy behaviors and preventive measures. 

  • Communication skills:

  • Effectively communicating with patients, staff, and other stakeholders, especially in stressful or chaotic situations. 

  • Problem-solving and critical thinking:

  • Analyzing situations, identifying problems, and developing solutions in the face of limited resources. 

  • Adaptability and resourcefulness:

  • Adapting to changing circumstances and finding creative solutions when resources are limited. 

  • Teamwork and collaboration:

  • Working effectively with other healthcare professionals and volunteers. 

  • Empathy and compassion: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others, particularly those who have experienced trauma or hardship.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc Nursing)

 Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of proven work experience in public health, working with homeless populations and migrant returnees

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • fluency in additional local languages

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and other computer software
