JOB SUMMARY

To lead and manage the Packaging Department (People, Plant, Process and Systems) in order to achieve the required standard of product quality and output most efficiently and effectively.

The Packaging Manager plans, organizes, and controls department resources (People, machines, inputs, and Systems) in order to achieve the required sales demand for quality product and volume, safety, and cost most efficiently and effectively through leveled production. At the same time, responsible for providing and maintaining all required packaging lines so packaging operates at optimal performance levels, including a culture of continuous improvement with tools such as 5S, EHS, Manufacturing excellence, and Visual management. It is critical to focus on developing team spirit, leading people, and being effective in delivering the business goals through CAP analysis.

The Packaging Manager focuses on lean or manufacturing excellence standard operations and problem-solving through root cause analysis (RCA) in the operations, achieving OEE of the lines and improving efficiency by adding big value to productivity that is reflected by Safety performance, Quality delivery, cost savings, and machine availability. At the same time, the Packaging Manager is the custodian of all world benchmark standards in Engineering and operational leadership systems for the packaging lines.

Key Responsibilities

  • OPERATIONAL

  • Monthly, Weekly & Daily Packaging Program achieved

  • Daily Beer, cullet, and Label losses managed; developed internal audit document

  • Optimized Line performance and availability and hit packaging efficiency targets

  • Develop internal Audit Document

  • Support new product development program

  • Ensure conformance to targets and standards

  • SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

  • Cullet loss, Labels, chemicals, Water usage, and beer loss measured and reduced

  • Maintenance implemented and adhered to autonomous, preventive, and PM; maintenance, preventive, and Asset Care in place

  • Energy savings implemented

  • Waste Management

  • Engineering Standards complied with world packaging lines benchmark

  • IMPLEMENT SOP’s

  • Develop SOP’s, 5S , EHS and review

  • Implement best practices

  • Manage SOP review and schedule review

  • PRODUCT QUALITY

  • Targets reviewed (KPI's)

  • Review Critical Quality aspects and parameters (tighten the specs)

  • Micro Standards introduced and managed

  • Introduce critical aspects to be measured

  • Regulatory standards

  • Ensure application of documented standards

  • Ensure conformance to specifications and standards

  • HUMAN RESOURCE

  • Create team shift competency in daily performance/SIC

  • Training of staff through CAP

  • Develop competency guide for key positions: Packaging Engineer, Team Leaders, RM Controller, Operators, Mechanical & Electrical Supervisors, Machine Specialists, OHSEM, Supervisors, Technicians, and Operators

  • Prepare and implement Development plans for key positions

  • Develop employees.

  • Ensure a healthy industrial relations climate.

  • Manage and apply people policies and practices.

  • Manage HR related KPIs

  • SAFETY AND HOUSEKEEPING

  • Introduce and manage 5S, EHS and improve VM standard

  • Ensure PPE availability and compliance

  • Ensure safe working procedures/Safety locks

  • Implement and comply with safety, health, and environmental legislation and procedures

  • Maintain safety and housekeeping standards

  • FINANCE

  • Manage financial performance - Fixed costs and variable costs

  • Manage maintenance costs, projects, and capex budgeting and executions

  • Monitor and manage production processes to within budgets

  • Optimize production plan and shifts across the hall, aligned to agreed Run Strategies

  • Project and manage annual Packaging capex spend

  • Draw up annual budget followed by close follow-up and execution

  • Monitor expenditure, material usage and waste reduction

Job Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education: BSc in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering. IBD Diploma in Packaging is an added advantage

Experience: At least 9 years’ relevant work experience, with 4 years’ managerial experience in a packaging team leading or supervising Krones or KHS lines
