The Pediatric Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive, compassionate, and family-centered nursing care to infants, children, and adolescents with acute, chronic, and complex health conditions. The role involves patient assessment, implementation of care plans, medication administration, monitoring patient progress, health education, and collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure optimal pediatric patient outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Duties:
Provide direct nursing care to pediatric patients in accordance with established clinical standards, policies, and procedures.
Conduct comprehensive assessments of pediatric patients, including physical, developmental, emotional, and psychosocial evaluations.
Monitor and document patients’ vital signs, symptoms, and responses to treatment, promptly reporting significant changes in condition.
Administer medications, intravenous therapies, blood products, immunizations, and other prescribed treatments safely and accurately.
Assist physicians and other healthcare professionals during examinations, procedures, diagnostic tests, and treatments.
Implement individualized nursing care plans and evaluate patient outcomes to ensure effective and timely care.
Provide wound care, pain management, nutritional support, respiratory care, and other therapeutic interventions as required.
Monitor growth and developmental milestones and identify potential concerns requiring further evaluation or intervention.
Recognize and respond appropriately to pediatric emergencies and deterioration in patient condition.
Promote patient safety through adherence to infection prevention measures, medication safety practices, and clinical care standards.
Support and encourage family involvement in the care and recovery process.
Provide age-appropriate emotional support and comfort measures to pediatric patients and their families.
Administrative Duties:
Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient records, nursing documentation, medication administration records, and clinical reports.
Collaborate closely with pediatricians, specialists, pharmacists, therapists, dietitians, and other multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
Participate in patient admissions, transfers, discharges, referrals, and continuity of care activities.
Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control protocols, patient safety standards, and hospital policies.
Ensure proper utilization, maintenance, and readiness of pediatric medical equipment and supplies.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, incident reporting, and patient safety programs.
Assist in maintaining a safe, clean, and child-friendly healthcare environment.
Educational Duties:
Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, nutrition, immunizations, developmental milestones, discharge instructions, and follow-up care.
Provide counseling and support to families regarding disease prevention, child health promotion, and home care management.
Participate in clinical training, continuing professional development, and competency assessments.
Support orientation and mentorship of newly assigned nurses, students, and healthcare staff within pediatric services.
Stay updated with current evidence-based pediatric nursing practices, child health guidelines, and advances in pediatric healthcare.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Nursing.
Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in pediatric nursing, pediatric inpatient services, neonatal care, pediatric emergency services, or related clinical settings.
Specialized training in Pediatric Nursing, Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong knowledge of pediatric nursing principles, child growth and development, common pediatric illnesses, and pediatric medication administration.
Excellent clinical assessment and critical thinking skills with the ability to identify and respond to changes in pediatric patient conditions.
Proficiency in pediatric patient monitoring, emergency response, infection prevention, and family-centered care practices.
Strong communication, counseling, and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with children, parents, caregivers, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
Ability to provide compassionate and age-appropriate care to pediatric patients from infancy through adolescence.
Knowledge of patient safety standards, quality improvement principles, and healthcare regulations.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, professionalism, and commitment to excellence in pediatric patient care.
Proficiency in healthcare documentation systems and patient record management.
