About MLWDA
Mujejeguwa Loka Women Development Association (MLWDA) is a pioneering women-led Ethiopian charity established in 1996 and legally registered in 2002. Originating as a grassroots initiative in the Benishangul-Gumuz Region, its founding mission was to address critical women’s health challenges—especially unsafe childbirth practices like forest births. The name “Mujejeguwa Loka” means “down light” in the Gumuz language, symbolizing hope and enlightenment for marginalized women. Over the years, MLWDA has expanded its work to both Benishangul-Gumuz and Amhara regions, focusing on improving the social, economic, and health status of women and children through participatory and rights-based approaches.
The organization’s mission centers on advancing women’s rights, gender equality, and environmental rehabilitation through community-led programs, advocacy, andcapacity-building. MLWDA implements initiatives that combat gender-based violence, promote legal awareness, and deliver essential health services, including counseling and safe childbirth practices. Recognized as one of Ethiopia’s leading indigenous, non-religious, and non-political NGOs, MLWDA continues to empower women at the grassroots and institutional levels—strengthening their participation in local governance, access to justice, and sustainable livelihoods.
