Orbis prevents and treats blindness through hands-on training, public health education, improved access to quality eye care, and partnerships with local health care organizations in an effort to eliminate avoidable blindness. Orbis International-Ethiopia is a legally registered Country Office of this organization, carrying out the same mission in Ethiopia.
Orbis International-Ethiopia is seeking to recruit Project Coordinators to implement a project entitled “Establishing Comprehensive Secondary Eye Care Unit in Southwest Ethiopia” starting from 1st June/2025. The goal of this project is to contribute to the reduction of avoidable blindness and visual impairment in SWERS through establishing a functional secondary care units (SECUs) that provides a comprehensive and quality secondary care services as seen below:

Job Summary
The Project Coordinator will be responsible for planning and implementation of the aforementioned project that is being implemented in collaboration with Bonga Gebretsadik Shawol General Hospital and Mizan Tepi University Teaching Hospital. The Project Coordinator will also be responsible in compiling reports and documentation, financial & resource management, coordinate service delivery and outreach, provide procurement, logistical, administrative and operational support for the project.
Stakeholder Coordination and Communication
Serve as the primary liaison between Orbis Ethiopia, Bonga Gebretsadik Shawol General Hospital/Mizan Tepi University Hospital, the Regional Health Bureau, and other relevant government offices.
Coordinate biannual partnership meetings, draft minutes, and share them with the Orbis Project/Program Manager and relevant stakeholders.
Facilitate visits by Orbis staff, donors, partners, and other key stakeholders as communicated by Orbis or the hospital.
Planning and Implementation
Develop detailed annual and quarterly work plans in alignment with the project document, in consultation with the Project Manager and the hospital’s Eye Care Unit.
Collaborate closely with the Eye Care Unit, Medical Director, CEO, and regional signatory offices to ensure effective implementation of project activities.
Actively participate in all training phases—from planning to implementation.
Participate in project monitoring and evaluation activities as required.
Reporting and Documentation
Submit monthly, quarterly, bi-annual and annual numerical and narrative reports to the project manager.
Document best practices and high-quality case stories in each quarterly report.
Keep comprehensive and well-organized documentation of all project-related materials.
Financial and Resource Management
Manage petty cash transferred to the project coordination office and ensure timely settlement.
Safeguard Orbis Ethiopia resources, ensuring they are used appropriately and protected from misuse.
Service Delivery and Outreach
Coordinate and implement community outreach and school screening programs.
Ensure regular delivery of eye health education sessions.
Organize and conduct follow-up activities including cataract surgery visual outcome assessments, supportive supervision for spectacle use among students, data quality assessments, and outreach programs. Share findings with the supervisor.
Maintain an active patient tracking and referral system.
Procurement and Logistics
Participate in procurement planning with the Eye Care Unit and CEO, ensuring timely execution.
Share the annual wish list with specifications, facilitate support letters for customs clearance, and submit Goods Receiving Notes (GRNs) to the Orbis Operations Department.
Monitor the functionality of the optical workshop and report findings to hospital leadership and the Orbis Project Manager.
Administrative and Operational Support
Ensure timely completion and submission of timesheets, signed by relevant authorities.
Meet monthly with the Orbis Project Manager for periodic reporting, including leave and time sheet updates.
Adhere to fleet movement guidelines, comply with security protocols, and report any incidents prior to travel.
Ensure vehicle maintenance and servicing are conducted in line with fleet policy and operations guidance.
Respond and work any project related activities as assigned by Orbis project/program Manager, regional signatory bodies, and the hospital.
Required Qualification and Experience
Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in eye health-related field from a recognized university.
Experience in secondary or tertiary eye care setting
Minimum of two years of experience working.
At least one year of direct experience in coordinating or managing eye care projects or centres.
Experience in non-governmental organization (NGO) setting is an added advantage.
A master’s degree in public health (MPH) is an added advantage.
Required Skills, Attitudes and Attributes
Ability and self-discipline to work with minimum supervision
Excellent communication skill in English (both verbal and written)
Able to produce good quality narrative reports and high-quality case stories
Computer literate (basic Microsoft office applications) and internet particularly
Speaking the local language of the project area population is an asset and able to interact with and manage people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
Ability to work effectively in a team-driven environment.
Accepts accountability for work assigned and performed
Supports a customer-centered approach to programs, services, and systems.
Willing to travel to the field, when necessary.
