The Radiology Technologist is responsible for performing diagnostic imaging procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of diseases and injuries. The role involves patient assessment and preparation, operation of imaging equipment, image acquisition and quality assurance, radiation safety, patient education, and collaboration with radiologists and multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, accurate, and high-quality imaging services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clinical Duties:

    • Perform diagnostic imaging procedures in accordance with physician requests, departmental protocols, and professional standards.

    • Operate radiologic imaging equipment, including X-ray, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Fluoroscopy, Mammography, and other imaging modalities as assigned and qualified.

    • Verify patient identity, review imaging requests, and assess patient readiness before conducting examinations.

    • Prepare and position patients appropriately to obtain optimal diagnostic images while ensuring patient comfort and safety.

    • Administer contrast media and other imaging-related preparations as authorized and in accordance with established protocols.

    • Monitor patients during imaging procedures and promptly identify and respond to adverse reactions or emergencies.

    • Produce high-quality diagnostic images while minimizing radiation exposure and ensuring adherence to radiation protection principles.

    • Evaluate image quality and perform repeat imaging only when clinically necessary.

    • Assist radiologists and other healthcare professionals during specialized imaging procedures and interventional radiology procedures as required.

    • Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure compliance with ethical and professional standards.

  • Administrative Duties:

    • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely imaging records, examination documentation, and patient information within the Radiology Information System (RIS) and other applicable systems.

    • Collaborate closely with radiologists, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate efficient patient care.

    • Schedule and coordinate imaging examinations to ensure effective patient flow and optimal utilization of imaging resources.

    • Ensure proper utilization, maintenance, calibration, and operational readiness of radiology equipment.

    • Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns, and technical issues promptly to appropriate personnel.

    • Monitor inventory levels and ensure availability of imaging supplies, contrast agents, and consumables.

    • Adhere to radiation safety regulations, infection prevention protocols, patient safety standards, and hospital policies.

    • Participate in quality assurance programs, equipment quality control testing, audits, accreditation activities, and performance improvement initiatives.

  • Educational Duties:

    • Educate patients and families regarding imaging procedures, preparation requirements, expected outcomes, and post-procedure instructions.

    • Provide guidance and support to students, interns, and newly assigned radiology personnel as required.

    • Participate in continuing professional development, competency assessments, and technical training programs.

    • Promote awareness of radiation safety principles and patient protection measures.

    • Stay updated with advances in medical imaging technologies, radiographic techniques, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based practices.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Medical Radiologic Technology, Medical Imaging Technology, Radiography, or a related field.

  • Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia

  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in diagnostic imaging services, preferably within a hospital or specialized imaging center.

  • Experience in X-ray, CT Scan, MRI, Mammography, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound support services, or Interventional Radiology is highly desirable.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong knowledge of radiographic procedures, imaging techniques, anatomy, physiology, and diagnostic imaging principles.

  • Proficiency in operating diagnostic imaging equipment and associated information systems.

  • Excellent understanding of radiation safety principles, radiation protection standards, and patient safety requirements.

  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to produce high-quality diagnostic images while ensuring patient comfort and safety.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective interaction with patients, families, radiologists, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to accuracy and quality.

  • Proficiency in Radiology Information Systems (RIS), Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), Electronic Medical Records (EMR), and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, accountability, and commitment to excellence in diagnostic imaging services.
