The Scrub Nurse (Operating Room Nurse) is responsible for providing specialized perioperative nursing care before, during, and immediately after surgical procedures. The role involves preparing and maintaining a sterile surgical environment, managing surgical instruments and supplies, assisting surgeons during procedures, ensuring adherence to infection prevention standards, and promoting patient safety throughout the perioperative process.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Duties:
Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures by ensuring the availability of required instruments, equipment, implants, and supplies.
Establish and maintain sterile fields throughout surgical procedures in accordance with infection prevention and aseptic technique standards.
Perform surgical hand scrubbing, gowning, and gloving procedures according to established protocols.
Assist surgeons and other members of the surgical team during operative procedures by anticipating procedural needs and providing instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment.
Conduct instrument, sponge, sharps, and surgical item counts before, during, and after procedures to ensure patient safety.
Inspect surgical instruments and equipment for functionality, sterility, and readiness prior to use.
Handle and prepare surgical specimens for proper labeling, documentation, and transportation to the laboratory.
Assist in positioning patients safely for surgical procedures while maintaining patient dignity and preventing injury.
Support implementation of surgical safety checklists and perioperative patient safety protocols.
Identify and promptly report any breaches in sterile technique, equipment malfunctions, or patient safety concerns.
Participate in emergency surgical procedures and provide support during urgent and complex operations.
Assist in the turnover and preparation of operating rooms between surgical cases.
Administrative Duties:
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of surgical procedures, instrument counts, implants, specimens, and perioperative nursing activities.
Collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthetists, circulating nurses, surgical technologists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care.
Monitor inventory and availability of surgical instruments, sterile supplies, implants, and consumables.
Ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of sterile supplies and surgical equipment.
Participate in equipment maintenance checks and promptly report equipment deficiencies or repair needs.
Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols, patient safety standards, operating room policies, and hospital procedures.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, perioperative audits, incident reporting, and accreditation activities.
Educational Duties:
Provide support and guidance to newly assigned operating room personnel, nursing staff, students, and trainees.
Participate in clinical training, continuing professional development, and competency assessments related to perioperative nursing practice.
Promote adherence to evidence-based surgical nursing practices, infection prevention measures, and patient safety standards.
Participate in educational programs related to new surgical techniques, technologies, instruments, and equipment.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Nursing.
Valid professional license by the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA) or equivalent regulatory body in Ethiopia
Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience in Operating Room Nursing, Perioperative Nursing, Surgical Services, or related clinical settings.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Strong knowledge of perioperative nursing practices, surgical procedures, sterile techniques, infection prevention, and operating room protocols.
Proficiency in surgical instrumentation, sterile field management, instrument handling, and surgical counting procedures.
Excellent clinical judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills in a high-acuity surgical environment.
Strong understanding of patient safety principles, surgical safety checklists, and risk management practices.
Ability to anticipate the needs of surgeons and surgical teams during procedures.
Excellent communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration within multidisciplinary surgical teams.
