1.1 General Information

New Millennium Women Empowerment Organization (NMWEO) is an indigenous, non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization established in 2007 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The organization was previously registered at the Ministry of Justice under registration number 3018 and later registered and licensed by the Federal Charities and Societies Agency as an Ethiopian resident’s charity by the Charities and Societal Proclamation No. 621/2009 by registration No. 0539. NMWEO has been re-registered according to the Civil Society Organizations Proclamation No.113/2019 with registration No. 0539.

Job Purpose

The Social Worker will support the implementation of community-based protection interventions at woreda and community level. The position will work directly with individuals, families, communities, and community structures to identify protection and social needs, strengthen community participation, facilitate access to appropriate services, and promote safe and inclusive community environments.

The Social Worker will contribute to strengthening community protection mechanisms, prevention of harmful practices, community mobilization, referral and follow-up, community action, and the effective functioning of protection-related services.

The position will apply social work principles, confidentiality, dignity, informed consent, safeguarding, PSEA, gender equality, disability inclusion, child protection, accountability, and Do No Harm throughout all activities.

Key Responsibilities

A.   Community-Based Social Work

  • Establish and maintain constructive relationships with community members and community structures.
  • Identify protection and social concerns affecting individuals, families, and communities.
  • Support communities to identify their own protection priorities and solutions.
  • Promote participation of women, girls, children, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
  • Provide appropriate basic social support within the scope of professional competence.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.

B.   Community Mobilization and Engagement

  • Mobilize and engage communities in project interventions.
  • Support community structures to participate effectively in protection activities.
  • Facilitate community dialogue and awareness activities.
  • Work with community and religious leaders to promote positive attitudes and practices that protect women, girls, and children.
  • Promote community ownership and sustainability of protection interventions.
  • Ensure community engagement is inclusive, conflict-sensitive, and culturally appropriate.

C.   Protection Identification and Referral

  • Identify individuals and groups experiencing or at risk of protection concerns.
  • Provide information on available services and support options.
  • Facilitate safe and appropriate referrals through established referral pathways.
  • Follow up on referrals when appropriate and in accordance with confidentiality and consent requirements.
  • Coordinate with service providers and relevant authorities as required.
  • Immediately report serious protection and safeguarding concerns through established procedures.

D.   Support to Community Protection Mechanisms

  • Support the Protection Officer in strengthening community protection structures.
  • Provide regular follow-up and technical support to community-based protection actors.
  • Support community structures to identify and address protection concerns.
  • Encourage community-based prevention and referral practices.
  • Document community concerns, actions, and feedback and share relevant information with the Protection Officer.

E.   Support to Women and Girls Safe Space

  • Support the safe and effective functioning of the WGSS.
  • Promote safe access and participation of women and girls.
  • Provide information and basic social support within the scope of the role.
  • Support linkages between WGSS users and appropriate specialized services.
  • Promote confidentiality, dignity, safety, accessibility, and respect.
  • Identify operational or protection concerns affecting women and girls and report them to the Protection Officer.

F.    Community Prevention and Social Support

  • Support community initiatives aimed at preventing protection risks and harmful practices.
  • Facilitate discussions that promote positive social norms and protective behaviors.
  • Support communities to develop and implement locally identified protection solutions.
  • Encourage positive family and community support systems.
  • Provide appropriate information and awareness on available protection and social services.

G.  Monitoring, Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of activities and community engagement.
  • Provide regular updates to the Protection Officer.
  • Support collection of project monitoring information and community feedback.
  • Document referrals and follow-up actions in accordance with confidentiality requirements.
  • Contribute to project reports, lessons learned, success stories, and case documentation where appropriate and ethically permissible.
  • Ensure all records are safely stored and protected.

H. Safeguarding and Accountability

  • Comply with NMWEO safeguarding, PSEA, child protection, code of conduct, data protection, and other relevant policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and protect the privacy and dignity of community members.
  • Promote safe reporting of protection and safeguarding concerns.
  • Ensure that activities are implemented according to Do No Harm principles.
  • Promote accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups
  •   Inform communities about available feedback and complaint mechanisms.
Job Requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Gender Studies, Community Development, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in social work, protection, humanitarian programming, child protection, GBV, community mobilization, or related areas.
  • Experience working directly with vulnerable individuals and communities.
  • Experience in community engagement, awareness raising, or facilitation.
  • Knowledge of protection principles and referral mechanisms.
  • Experience working in humanitarian or conflict-affected settings is an advantage.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, listening, facilitation, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in field-based and challenging environments.
