ABOUT THE ROLE

The Storeman (Engineering DPT) is responsible for the safe, accurate, and efficient receipt, storage, control, and issue of engineering materials, spare parts, tools, consumables, and maintenance-related equipment required for mining and processing operations. The role ensures that engineering inventory is properly identified, stored, preserved, recorded, and readily available to support planned and breakdown maintenance while maintaining accurate stock levels, warehouse housekeeping, and compliance with KGM Health, Safety and Environmental standards and inventory procedures.

Job Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Store Management, Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Materials Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Technical training in engineering materials, inventory management, or warehouse operations is an advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience in engineering stores, mining, mineral processing, heavy industry, manufacturing, or a similar industrial environment.

  • Practical experience handling mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, hydraulic, pneumatic, welding, and general maintenance spare parts.

  • Experience supporting mining or processing plant maintenance activities is highly desirable.

  • Experience using an ERP or computerized inventory management system is required.

Roster: Fly-In/Fly-Out (6 Weeks On / 2 Weeks Off)

Duties and Responsibilities

Engineering Stores Operations
  • Receive, inspect, identify, and verify engineering materials, spare parts, tools, equipment, and consumables against approved purchase orders, delivery notes, and specifications.

  • Ensure received materials are correctly counted, labelled, coded, and recorded before being placed into storage.

  • Store engineering items in designated locations according to their type, size, value, condition, and storage requirements.

  • Issue spare parts, tools, lubricants, consumables, and other engineering materials against authorized requisitions or work orders.

  • Ensure materials issued to maintenance teams are correctly recorded and traceable.

  • Maintain orderly and efficient storage of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, welding, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other engineering materials.

  • Ensure critical and high-value spare parts are properly secured and controlled.

  • Maintain appropriate storage conditions for items requiring special protection, including bearings, electrical components, seals, chemicals, lubricants, and other sensitive materials.

Inventory Control and Stock Management

  • Maintain accurate inventory records for all engineering stock and ensure physical stock agrees with system records.

  • Monitor minimum, maximum, and reorder levels and communicate potential shortages of critical engineering spares.

  • Conduct regular stock counts, cycle counts, and physical inventory checks as required.

  • Investigate and report stock discrepancies, damaged materials, obsolete items, and unidentified stock.

  • Apply appropriate stock rotation principles, including FIFO/FEFO, where applicable.

  • Monitor slow-moving, obsolete, surplus, and non-moving engineering materials and provide information for management review.

  • Maintain accurate records of stock movements, transfers, issues, returns, and adjustments.

  • Support the identification and control of critical spare parts required to maintain plant availability and operational continuity.

Maintenance and Engineering Support

  • Provide timely support to Engineering and Maintenance teams by ensuring required spare parts, tools, and consumables are available when needed.

  • Prepare and issue materials for planned preventive maintenance, shutdowns, major maintenance activities, and breakdown repairs.

  • Coordinate with Maintenance Planners, Supervisors, Engineers, and Procurement teams regarding material requirements and availability.

  • Support the identification of alternative or equivalent spare parts where approved and within established procedures.

  • Receive and process returned or unused materials from maintenance activities and ensure they are inspected, identified, and returned to the correct storage location.

  • Maintain appropriate stock levels of frequently used maintenance items to minimize operational delays.

  • Assist with preparation of material kits for planned maintenance and shutdown activities.

Materials Identification and Preservation

  • Verify part numbers, descriptions, specifications, quantities, and condition of engineering materials before storage or issue.

  • Maintain proper identification and labelling of spare parts and materials to prevent incorrect issue or installation.

  • Ensure engineering materials are protected against corrosion, contamination, moisture, dust, deterioration, and other forms of damage.

  • Monitor shelf life and condition of materials where applicable and report items requiring preservation, replacement, or disposal.

  • Maintain manufacturer documentation, certificates, technical specifications, manuals, and other relevant material records where required.

  • Ensure materials are stored according to manufacturer recommendations and site procedures.

Warehouse Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all KGM warehouse, engineering, HSE, security, and inventory control procedures.

  • Conduct required inspections of storage areas, racks, lifting equipment, tools, and material-handling equipment.

  • Maintain safe access, appropriate stacking, clear walkways, and proper segregation of materials.

  • Use appropriate PPE and safe material-handling techniques when receiving, moving, storing, and issuing materials.

  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, lifting equipment, or other material-handling equipment only when trained and authorized.

  • Properly segregate and control hazardous, flammable, chemical, and environmentally sensitive materials in accordance with site requirements.

  • Report hazards, incidents, damaged materials, unsafe storage conditions, and near misses promptly.

  • Maintain high standards of housekeeping within engineering stores, laydown areas, and associated storage facilities.

ERP, Documentation and Reporting

  • Enter and maintain accurate material receipts, issues, transfers, returns, and stock adjustments in the approved ERP/inventory management system.

  • Maintain accurate bin locations, stock codes, descriptions, quantities, and material status.

  • Process authorized material requests, reservations, issues, and returns in accordance with established procedures.

  • Maintain documentation including purchase orders, goods received notes, material requisitions, issue vouchers, transfer documents, and other inventory records.

  • Prepare routine stock and inventory reports as required by the Stores or Supply Chain Supervisor.

  • Provide accurate information on stock availability, shortages, critical spares, and outstanding material requirements.

  • Maintain complete and traceable records to support internal controls and audits.

Coordination and Communication

  • Coordinate closely with Engineering, Maintenance, Procurement, Supply Chain, Finance, and other relevant departments.

  • Communicate material shortages, delivery delays, discrepancies, damaged goods, and urgent requirements promptly.

  • Support Procurement and Supply Chain teams with accurate information on stock availability and historical consumption.

  • Participate in regular meetings, inventory reviews, stock counts, and maintenance planning activities as required.

  • Maintain effective communication during shift handovers to ensure continuity of stores operations.

  • Perform other duties related to engineering stores and materials management as assigned by the Supervisor.

Skills & Competencies

  • Good knowledge of warehouse and inventory control principles.

  • Understanding of engineering spare parts, tools, consumables, and maintenance materials.

  • Ability to identify and verify part numbers, material descriptions, specifications, and quantities.

  • Knowledge of stock control, stock rotation, cycle counting, and inventory reconciliation.

  • Good understanding of material storage, preservation, handling, and segregation requirements.

  • Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and ERP/inventory management systems.

  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation and inventory records.

  • Basic understanding of mining and processing plant maintenance requirements is an advantage.

  • Forklift or material-handling equipment competency is an advantage.
