1. Position Title - Accountant

2. Reporting To - Project Coordinator / Finance Manager

4. Contract Duration – one year and possible extension 

5. Background 

The Salesians of Don Bosco Ethiopia have been operating for 50 years, implementing education, vocational training, livelihood, and humanitarian projects across five regions. The organization manages multiple donor-funded projects requiring sound financial management, compliance, and reporting. To ensure effective stewardship of resources, a qualified Accountant is needed to handle day‑to‑day financial transactions, maintain accurate records, and support project and organizational financial reporting.

6. Overall Objective

To ensure timely, accurate, and compliant financial management of the assigned project(s) and/or organizational accounts, in accordance with donor requirements, Ethiopian law, and Salesian financial policies.

7. Specific Duties and Responsibilities 

Financial Transactions & Recording

  • Record all financial transactions in the accounting system (Peachtree, or Excel-based ledgers) accurately and on time. 

  • Prepare payment vouchers, journal entries, and ensure proper documentation (invoices, receipts, contracts) for all expenditures. 

  • Budget Monitoring of different Projects 

  • Transfer and Check Verification 

  • Report Review & Verification 

  • Communication to implementation center 

  • Reviews the work of Accountants and provide support 

 

Payments & Compliance 

  • Process payments to suppliers, contractors, and staff (including per diems, allowances) in line with approved budgets and Don Bosco as well as donor’s procurement procedures.

  • Verify that all expenditures comply with donor rules, organizational policies, and Ethiopian tax laws (withholding tax, VAT, etc.).

Budget Monitoring & Reporting

  • Assist the Project Coordinator and Finance Manager in preparing monthly, quarterly, and final financial reports for donors.

  • Monitor budget vs. actual expenditure and highlight any variances or under/over-spending.

  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and request funds in a timely manner.

Bank & Cash Management

  • Reconcile bank accounts on a monthly basis and prepare bank reconciliation statements.

  • Ensure safe custody of all financial documents.

Audit & Documentation

  • Prepare financial documentation for internal and external audits.

  • Maintain a well-organized filing system (hard and soft copies) for all financial records, ensuring ease of retrieval.

Capacity Building & Support

  • Provide financial guidance to project staff and implanting centers on documentation, compliance, and reporting.

  • Support the finance team in strengthening internal controls and accounting procedures.

Job Requirements

8. Qualifications and Experience

Education Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance Experience Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in accounting, preferably with an NGO or donor-funded project. Technical Skills Proficiency in accounting software; advanced Excel skills. Familiarity with Ethiopian tax laws and financial regulations. Languages Fluency in English (written and spoken). Personal Attributes High integrity, attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, good interpersonal and communication skills.
