About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. Currently the ERCS has a structure consisting of Currently the Society has 14 regional branches, 40 zonal branches, 180 woreda branches, and 5,871 Kebele Red Cross Committees.

ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs relating to food security, climate change adaptation, livelihood diversification, and institutional capacity building interventions, with the aim of creating resilience households and communities. ERCS works in partnership with the Ethiopian Government, International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC), International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), partnering National Societies, members, volunteers and the communities we serve.

2. Job Summary

Under the supervision of Transport Operation and technical service Team Lead, Heavy Truck Driver /Truck Trailer Driver is responsible for taking care of the safety and careful driving of the truck; abide by the rules and regulations of the ERCS. Follows applicable traffic and driving laws, staying aware of and reporting any incidents on the road; Maintains truck logbook according to the national society regulations and keeps records of materials and products transported; Positions blocks and ties rope around items to secure cargo for transport and keeps cleans, inspects, and services the truck and services truck with oil, fuel, and radiator fluid to maintain tractor-trailer; Keeps the trucks and the equipment they work with in good working order and tidy and inspects the truck after each trip and record defects they find; Checks the vehicle for oil gauges, tires, fuel and water and ensures that the vehicle is in a proper functioning order; Keeps the motor vehicle in good running order and carries out minor breakdown maintenances and repairs; Keeps a record of departure, arrival, mileage covered and fuel consumed and other pertinent data records as per the internal control policy and procedure in place.

3. Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Transports of different types of goods, materials and relief items to the destination. Drives long distances, maneuvering the truck into unloading and loading positions along the way.
  2. Follows applicable traffic and driving laws, staying aware of and reporting any incidents on the road
  3. Complete reports, work orders, order parts and perform other administrative duties as required daily
  4. Maintains truck logbook according to the national society regulations and keeps record of materials and products transported.
  5. Positions blocks and ties rope around items to secure cargo for transport and keeps cleans, inspects, and services the truck and services truck with oil, fuel, and radiator fluid to maintain tractor-trailer.
  6. Ensures that any cargo transports are fully secured to the trailer, using blocks, chains, covers, or ropes.
  7. Needs to ensure that transportation meets safety compliance and regulation
  8. Operates equipment on vehicle to load, unload, or disperse cargo or materials.
  9. Keeps the trucks and the equipment they work with in good working order and tidy and inspects the trailer/truck after each trip and record defects they find.
  10. Inspects truck before and after trips and submits report indicating truck condition.
  11. Fastens chain or binders to secure load on trailer/truck during transit and loads or unloads, or assists in loading and unloading truck.
  12. Checks the vehicle for oil gauges, tires, fuel and water and ensures that the vehicle is in a proper functioning order;
  13. Ensures and observes the departure and arrival time at each point of station well respected and properly functioning;
  14. Observes and complies with traffic regulations and other internal/the Society’s rules and regulations while driving and providing transporting the materials or relief items
  15. Reports any vehicle accident immediately to his/her supervisor and/or concerned body by using all possible media of communication
  16. Keeps the motor vehicle in good running order and carries out minor breakdown maintenances and repairs;
  17. Keeps a record of departure, arrival, mileage covered and fuel consumed and other pertinent data records as per the internal control policy and procedure in place;
  18. Maintain track record km covered, fuel & lubricants consumption of vehicles & prepare & submit reports thereof;
  19. Ensures at all times that there is enough fuel in the tank and checks on the level of oil and water and does refilling as needed;
  20. Replaces flat tires, spare parts and gets them repaired;
  21. Gets the motor vehicle washed, lubricated, inspected and maintained regularly;
  22. gets his/her driving license renewed as per regulations;
  23. Reports malfunctions or defects beyond his/her ability on the motor vehicle to superior for corrective actions;
  24. Performs other duties and responsibilities of the job as assigned by the transport operation and technical service section head or the transport service manager.

Job Specification

  • Educational Qualification: First degree or College Diploma/TVET level IV in Auto Motive Technology, Auto Mechanic, Auto Engine service, Auto electric service and with 5th grade/Dry Cargo Driving License.
  • Work Experience: With a minimum of 4/6 years’ relevant work experience
