Background
The Center for Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD) is a board-led, not-for-profit organization registered in Ethiopia under the Civil Societies Proclamation No. 1113/2019 with registry number 4307. CARD is a civil society organization committed to advancing human rights, democratic governance, and civic engagement in Ethiopia. Through its Digital Rights Program, CARD promotes digital literacy, online safety, and the protection of digital rights.
With support from Access Now, CARD is implementing the project “Equitable Access to the Internet, Online Safety, and Digital Literacy.” As part of this project, CARD has developed a Digital Literacy Toolkit/Manual intended to serve as a practical resource for youth, women, journalists, human rights defenders and other stakeholders engaged in digital literacy and online safety initiatives.
To ensure wider accessibility and usability of the toolkit among Amharic-speaking audiences, CARD seeks to engage a qualified translator to translate the finalized toolkit/manual from English into Amharic.
Objective of the Assignment
The objective of this assignment is to translate the finalized Digital Literacy Toolkit/Manual from English into Amharic, ensuring that the translated version accurately reflects the content, meaning, tone, and technical terminology of the original document while remaining clear, accessible, and culturally appropriate for the intended audience.
Intellectual property Rights: All translated materials produced under this assignment shall become the exclusive property of CARD.
Scope of Work
Under the supervision of CARD, the translator will:
Translate the complete Digital Literacy Toolkit/Manual from English into Amharic.
Ensure accuracy, consistency, and clarity throughout the translated document.
Appropriately translate technical terms and concepts related to:
Digital literacy
Online safety and digital security
Digital rights
Responsible social media use
Misinformation and disinformation
Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV)
Civic engagement and advocacy
Preserve the structure, formatting elements, headings, tables, exercises, case studies, and discussion questions contained in the original document.
Revise the translated document based on comments and feedback provided by CARD.
Submit a final publication-ready Amharic version of the toolkit/manual.
Deliverables
The consultant shall be responsible for delivering the following:
A complete draft translation of the Digital Literacy Toolkit/Manual from English into Amharic for review by CARD.
A revised and finalized Amharic version of the Digital Literacy Toolkit/Manual that incorporates all comments and feedback provided by CARD.
An editable version of the translated document in Microsoft Word format.
A publication-ready final version of the translated toolkit/manual that maintains the structure, content, and formatting of the original document.
Any revisions required by CARD to ensure accuracy, consistency, clarity, and appropriateness of technical terminology and language prior to final approval.
Specific deadlines for draft and final submissions will be agreed upon between CARD and the selected consultant.
Job Requirements
Experience: Demonstrated experience translating publications, manuals, training materials, reports, or similar documents from English to Amharic.
Duration of the Assignment: The assignment is expected to be completed within Fifteen (15) calendar days from the date of signing the agreement.
Skills & Competencies
Excellent written proficiency in both English and Amharic.
Familiarity with terminology related to digital literacy, human rights, governance, media, technology, or civic engagement.
Strong attention to detail and ability to produce high-quality translations within agreed timelines.
